Marriage can be hard! In our daily lives, we hear about struggling marriages and divorce, or we experience them ourselves.
1) What can make marriage hard at times? How can we trace this back to the Fall in Genesis 3?
Marriage is like a visual aid showing us the relationship between Christ and the church.
Read Ephesians 5:21-33.
2) How does this help us to understand a wife’s role in submitting to her husband (v.22-24, 33)?
3) What role does her husband play? What should his love for her be like (v.25-30, 33)?
4) How can this passage motivate a husband and wife to work hard at their roles in marriage?
Read Philippians 2:1-11.
5) What does it mean for our attitude in relationships to be the same as that of Christ Jesus (v.5)?
a. How does this help us to understand the specific ways in which wives and husbands are called to relate to each other?
In Genesis 2:18-25, part of God’s design for women is for them to be a ‘suitable helper’. In marriage, this will mean wives actively enabling and encouraging their husbands in leadership and sacrificial love.
6) With Philippians 2:1-11 in mind, how might wives fulfil this ‘helper’ design?
7) How might wives fail to fulfil God’s design for them, as they relate to their husbands?
8) How can we encourage and help the married people around us to grow in this area?
9) How can we encourage our children, the children we influence and the young single women around us, to have a biblical view of marriage?
