A Six Part Study
Habakkuk & Haggai
Now
The humanistic mindset our society delights to feed on tells us that we each have the right to ultimate fulfilment and that our pursuit of that will lead to the betterment of society as a whole. Put simply, if we all try harder, things will get better. There is a modicum of truth in that, but we also need to be realistic about life.
Loved ones die. We ourselves may be afflicted. There will be disappointments and failures and eventually a declining ability to do those things that we find pleasure in. You would have to have your brain entirely switched off not to ask at some point: Where is God and what is he doing?
This series will help us grapple with life as it really is - not just as we emerge from the pandemic but every day, and it will help us all draw near to the King of the Kingdom and make his Kingdom our priority.
Then
Habakkuk looks out on a world that has gone mad and wonders why God does not seem to be answering his prayers. The righteous suffer and those who are meant to be righteous are pursuing evil and thriving. Haggai looks out on a world where God has been kind to his people but his people have decided to forget the goodness of God and pursue their own Kingdoms and glory.
In both cases, God’s people have gone astray and both prophets are distressed.
The prophets share a word of wisdom that if heard and responded to will shape the generation they live amongst. Both point people back to God - one out of affliction, the other out of plenty - but what they all find is a generous and loving God who always provides for his people.
